About
Skills and competencies related to data literacy and data management are indispensable in today’s data-intensive research environment, both in STEM as well as in the humanities and social sciences. In recent years, there has been a significant shift in scientific communication towards open science, and many new approaches, tools and technologies have emerged, enabling a research process that goes beyond the traditional way of research. Open science has the potential to lead researchers to an open, collaborative, transparent, reproducible and, therefore, effective research process.
The University of Maribor Summer School offers students and young researchers an opportunity to learn and develop skills in the fields of research data management, open access to research results, the use of open research infrastructure, supercomputing resources and the European Open Science Cloud. With lectures and workshops led by domestic and international experts, the course will provide a deeper understanding of these topics and insight into valuable practical experience.
The UM Open Science Summer School is entitled to award 3 ECTS points for participation. ECTS points will be awarded to participants compliant with the following requirements:
- Attendance in the virtual pre-event (will be announced by e-mail). Alternatively, participants will be able to access the recorded session.
- Pre-reading of suggested materials.
- Active participation in all lectures.
- On-line assignments.
The lectures will be given in English.
Apply
Applications for the 2023 University of Maribor Open Science Summer School are closed.
The number of participants is limited to 40. Priority will be given to PhD students/candidates.
Anyone can apply, either as an Erasmus+ grant recipient (see below for more information) or as a self-funded participant.
There is no tuition fee for the courses – lectures and workshops. All materials, excursions and coffee breaks will be provided by the organizer of the summer school. The University of Maribor will also offer you one meal (lunch) per day free of charge. Participants are expected to bring their own laptops.
Accommodation and travel costs for the physical event in Slovenia are covered by the participants. The University of Maribor will provide you with accommodation at the student dormitory in Maribor (price: 100,00 EUR for the entire duration of the summer school).
The summer school is organised as an Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme (BIP). Students attending the summer school are entitled to Erasmus+ funding.
Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme (BIP)
The new Erasmus+ programme (2021–2027) introduces new Blended Intensive Programmes (BIPs) as alternative mobility for students. BIP combines short-term physical mobility with a virtual component and makes the Erasmus mobility more flexible. Students who participate in BIPs can maintain their study plans at their home institution and include the BIP as a parallel activity. Short-term online and physical mobility (one or two weeks in Slovenia) will constitute the only period outside their home institution.
Applying for an Erasmus+ grant
You need to check with your International Relations Office at your university about the application process for an Erasmus+ grant.
Students attending BIPs are entitled to financial support for the duration of their physical mobility. You receive 70 EUR/day for every day of the physical mobility and for two extra travelling days (if you use them). In case of green travel, you are entitled to four extra travelling days and additional support for green travel. Students with fewer opportunities may also receive additional financial support.
You will receive an Acceptance Letter and a confirmed Learning Agreement from the BIP organiser. You should forward these documents to the International Relations Office at your home institution when applying for financial support.
Please follow the application instructions carefully. The application process is the same for both, Erasmus+ grant recipients and self-funded participants.
